The kaokao pattern is a powerful Māori chevron or zigzag design traditionally woven into tukutuku panels, tāniko borders, and whakairo (carving). Kaokao represents shelter, safety, and guardianship. Its bold, angular shape reflects the powerful stance of warriors performing haka, symbolising courage, strength, endurance, and the determination to stand firm.
